Living Off-Grid – Soda Can Solar Heat

The thought of living completely off-grid in a home built out of shipping containers is fascinating. No mortgage and no utility bills would bring a new freedom that many have never experienced.

Living off-grid means no connection to utilities such as electricity, city water, natural gas and sewage. However, just because you live off grid does not mean you have to live without. You do not have to live like a caveman.

There are many ways to achieve an off-grid lifestyle, while still somewhat maintaining the modern conveniences we have all become accustomed to.

This article is a look at one such means of providing comfort to an off grid home.

The soda can solar heater is a do-it-yourself project that can supplement the heat provided to your home. Using the Sun’s energy by capturing it with an absorbing medium (soda cans) to provide passive heat to a home is a project that just about anyone can accomplish.

How do they work?

The tops and bottoms of soda cans are punctured to create holes for airflow. The cans are then glued together top-to-bottom to create long tubes. The Sun’s energy heats the air inside the soda can tubes and a small fan circulates the heated air into the home. This type of home heating will work best on sunny days so you will need other means of heating the home at night and on overcasts days.
